    Royal Botanical Garden

    On a verdant hillside south of central Thimphu, families picnic among rhododendrons as couples stroll paths winding up pine-covered hills at Bhutan's Royal Botanical Garden. Not to be confused with the Royal Botanical Park near the Dochula Pass, the smaller Royal Botanical Garden is located in Serbithang, a 20 minute drive south of the capital. Established in 1999, the garden covers 28 acres; its primary objective is to protect Bhutan's diverse botanical heritage. And, with the country's over 7,000 species of vascular plants, there is much to protect.

Traditionally made from yak skin, she decided that “yak skin is dirty” and that she needed a better material. As any clever innovator would, Pema set out to identify what readily available resource she could utilize for her invention. She began “harvesting” plastic with her mother and other family members.
