    Wild Bee Hives

    Despite the busy traffic on the main highway below, The botherless bees live in the uncountable massive hives hanging just above the road between Gelephu district and Tingtibi. Locally known as “Khago”, these huge wild rock bees play an important role in agricultural yields of the nearby local farmers. In the olden days, locals also collected honey from the hives and was an important source of nutrition. Now the locals domesticate other species of bee which produces more honey, thus, the wild hives are not hunted anymore. A signage warning the people passing by to close their car windows can be seen few kilometers before the location of the spot.

    Pema Choeki is a young woman weaver of Brokpa heritage. Her passion started when Pema once decided that she needed a better cushion to sit on. Traditionally made from yak skin, she decided that “yak skin is dirty” and that she needed a better material. As any clever innovator would, Pema set out to identify what readily available resource she could utilize for her invention. She began “harvesting” plastic with her mother and other family members.
